Autumn 1 - Rocks

Our first unit this year was Rocks. We started off with a fun lesson, where we created paper mountains to understand how they formed and how our Earth is made up of huge slabs of rock, called tectonic plates. Next, we looked closely at the three different types of rocks: metamorphic, igneous and sedimentary. We observed, compared and grouped different rocks according to their properties. Our third lesson continued from lesson 2, where we looked closely at how each rock type is formed - we then made our own chocolate rocks to demonstrate how each is made. After that, we looked at how fossils are formed, creating a step-by-step explanation text about it. Finally, we looked at how soil is formed, the different types of soil and their uses.
