Mastering Number - Reception/KS1

Mastering Number Programme

Hanbury's Farm is taking part in the National for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) project to support the teaching of basic maths skills in our school. This project aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.

In Reception, children have a 10 minute Mastering Number session, 4 times a week with an adult, as well as having access to various continuous provision maths activities throughout the week. In KS1, children have a 10-15 Mastering Number session in addition to their Power Maths lesson. Over the year, the children will experience using a range of resources and representations, including a small abacus-like piece of equipment called a rekenrek.
